Cycle of Studies

UnIC hosts a Doctoral Programme (DP) in Cardiovascular Sciences and a Master’s programme (MP) in Cardiovascular Pathophysiology. The DP was launched in 2009 and the MP in 2010. To date, these programmes are the only two postgraduate options in cardiovascular research available in Portugal and have been a success so far with all editions presenting many more candidates than vacancies, fulfilling students’ expectations, leading to outstanding international publications, and renewal of our research team.

Master Degree Course in Cardiovascular Pathophysiology

The Master Degree Course in Cardiovascular Pathophysiology aims to endow students with an advanced training in this field of knowledge. The promotion of the scientific research in an area with such an importance taking into account its predominance, incidence, morbidity and mortality is also one of our objectives. Cardiovascular diseases are, in fact, the first cause of death in Portugal and throughout the western world, being forecasted to continue that way in the upcoming decades.

Competences to be acquired:
Students are expected to be aware of the main issues which are still to be solved in the cardiovascular area. The research projects carried out by the students aim therefore to give some answers to those problems, thus instigating research and translation:
Hence, the skills to be developed by the students are the following:
- A systematic understanding in the domain of Cardiovascular Pathophysiology, namely its cellular and molecular mechanisms;
- A high-standard training in a demanding research environment, although duly supported and oriented;
- The training in advanced laboratory methods and techniques of scientific analysis and research;
- The development of skills to research and understand complex scientific information;
- The development of skills to design, project, adapt and carry out a research project taking into account all the requirements posed by the academic standards;
- The development of skills to create an original research project which contributes to the development of the area and which can be published on Portuguese and international publications indexed to ISI – Web of Science;
- The development of skills to interact with multidisciplinary research teams in the identification and formulation of relevant scientific problems;
- The capacity to analyse and assess scientific papers in the different areas of Cardiovascular Pathophysiology;
- The development of skills to present ideas and scientific results to specialized and non-specialized audiences.

Eligibility:

Applicants will be admitted if holding an Integrated Master Degree in one of the following areas: Medicine, or in the field of Health and Biological Sciences, Physics, Mathematics or Engineering.

Graduation Certificates:
- Master degree in Cardiovascular Pathophysiology (120 Credits ECTS)
- Especialização em Fisiopatologia Cardiovascular (60 Credits ECTS)

Courses coordination:

Doctoral Program in Cardiovascular Sciences

The Doctoral Programme in Cardiovascular Sciences aims to endow students with an advanced training in this field of knowledge. The nonexistence of a similar doctoral programme in this area in Portugal, and the fact that this area needs to be studied and researched, played a major role in creating this programme.

Eligibility:
Holders of a Degree or Integrated Master Degree in Medicine or in areas related to Biological and Health Sciences, Physics, Mathematics or Engineering with a minimum grade of 14 out 20.

Selection criteria:
- The Scientific Program Committee will examine the applicants’ curriculum vitae.
- Applicants who have the highest ranking will be invited to interview. The number of applicants to invite will be determined by the Scientific Program Committee.
- Admission is based on the academic excellence and on the result of the interview.

Graduation Certificates:
- Doctor Degree in Cardiovascular Sciences (240 Credits ECTS)
- Course of Doctor Degree in Cardiovascular Sciences (60 Credits ECTS)
