Myocardial Injury in COVID-19: a Prospective Clinical and Mechanistic Study

ABSTRACT

Myocardial injury is detected in a significant percentage of COVID-19 patients, even in the absence of previous cardiovascular disease. Despite its prognostic relevance, the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms, diagnostic approach and therapeutic management are largely unknown. To address this gap, we will implement a comprehensive clinical, analytical and imaging evaluation of COVID-19 patients admitted to the ICU, together with mechanistic studies using post-mortem myocardial samples.

Accurate tidal volume monitoring to optimize safe non-invasive ventilation settings in patients with SARS-CoV-2

ABSTRACT

SARS-CoV-2 is characterized by severe hypoxia with good lung compliance. Elective invasive ventilation has been preferred over NIV, with a consequent increase of ICU resources. It has been reported that patient anxiety and excessive inspired volume during NIV leads to the development of Patient Self-Inflicted Lung Injury (P-SILI) and NIV failure. Thus, we propose an individualized adjustment of NIV settings with accurate TV feedback to reduce treatment failure.
